工业与组织心理学
工业与组织心理学主要在工业、企业、和组织机构里发挥作用，包括：在厂房设备安装、产品质量设计方面考虑到人的因素，可以更有利于促进生产，提高效率；在人事部门中知人善任是人才选拔、人员安排、人力资源合理利用等一切工作的基础；在企业中调度员工的积极性，协调关系，既提高生产力也提高员工的满意度，创造良好的企业形象等，都离不开心理学规律的应用。
所有心理學家中約有4%屬於I/O這個領域，在整個心理學家中，我們佔的比例相當小，或許正是因為如此，所以有些人並不知道I/O這個領域。大約有一半的心理學家工作的專業領域是臨床與諮商心理學，人們對一般心理學家所抱持的刻板印象，或許正是因為這個原因所造成的。
I/O心理學做為一門專業領域，它的定義和整個心理學比起來，是比較狹窄的，多年以前，Blum與Naylor (1968)對它的定義是「只是將心理學的事實與原則應用或延伸至發生於商業與工業情境內的人類問題」（第4頁）。就廣義而言，I/O心理學家關心的是工作情境中的行為。I/O心理學有兩面：科學與實務。它是不折不扣的科學研究，它關心的是如何更認識工作中的人們，就像任何一門科學領域一樣，I/O心理學家提出問題以引導其研究，並使用科學方法來得到答案。心理學家努力將研究結果形成有助於解釋行為的有意義型態，並努力重覆驗證研究結果以對行為做推論。就此方面而言，I/O心理學是一門學術的學科。
I/O心理學的另一面──實務面──關注的是如何將知識應用在解決工作世界中的真實問題。I/O心理學的研究發現可以用來聘雇比較好的員工，降低缺席率，增進溝通，增加工作滿意，以及解決其他的無數問題。
大多數的I/O心理學家都覺得自己和科學及實務這兩方面都有關連，因此，他們的養成教育是以「科學家－實務者模式」為基礎，在科學研究和實務應用兩方面來訓練他們。
